13+ Fun and Creative Writing Exercises for Adults

If you are a writer, then you know what writer’s block means. There will be times when your mind will be full of ideas and that one dreaded moment when you can’t think of anything worth writing about. It can be an anxious time, especially if you have a deadline to meet.

Writing doesn’t come easily to many. How do you get the words to express your thoughts and combine them in a well-thought and crisp manner? Sometimes it’s just coming up with a single idea that’s difficult. You may have the best summary generator but still, need something to write down.

When writer’s block hits, you can indulge in any of the following activities to get your creative juices flowing:

  1. Out of Place

We’ve all had moments or experiences where we had to step outside our comfort zone. It could be moving to a new city where you didn’t know anyone. The combination of the excitement of a fresh start and the anxiety of where to start.

In this exercise, don’t just focus on your feelings. Project that feeling of awkwardness to the objects around you. Point out the strangeness of what you see. It is your creative edge.

  1. Insta Memory

Remember the times the world around you fades, and you slip into your mind. Maybe you had a rough day, and a memory brightens it, and you find yourself smiling. Take a snapshot of that particular memory.

Write down about it. If you don’t know where to start, you can begin with the people in it. What are they doing? Describe the visual details of that memory, from colors, weather, to facial expressions.

Use your words to bring that memory to life; you won’t need an article summary generator, to do that.

  1. First Romantic encounter

Yeah, it is human nature to desire to belong. You may not want everybody to like you, but you sure yearn for that one person who gets you. Love is a tricky subject, I dare say. After, the honeymoon period comes the times when you second guess your decisions.

They say, you never forget your first love. Put that into words how you felt when you first saw them. Maybe you had butterflies in your stomach. Or you never gave them a second thought until you started talking to each other.

  1. Waking Up

It is safe to assume that we don’t really like Mondays, right? My feelings of trepidation always begin every Sunday afternoon. I often wish that weekends were longer and Monday never comes.

Every Monday morning I have to battle with the need of waking up to work and merely indulging in my desires and letting go of every care. Well, the struggle mostly ends up with the need to do something, winning.

Write about your mornings. How do you feel when the alarm rings?

  1. First Word

You have a blank paper staring at you and no ideas flowing in your head. What next? Think about any word. The first one that comes to mind write about it. It could be in the form of a poem or an article.

Just write and exhaust all you think about it. Right now, the words that come to mind is the color “red.” It is believed to be the color of love and can also be a sign of danger. Go on.

  1. Life Story

I know you could write a whole book about it. But in this exercise, summarize it into just five sentences. What makes your life story interesting? Speak of the events that had an impact.

  1. Road Trip

If you haven’t been on a road trip, then, you consider one. You can even imagine one and write about it. The fun, the thrill, the surprise, and disappointments. Just note them down, in your own words.

  1. A Day in the Shoes of your Favorite Celebrity

Calm down, now! List down the top three famous people that you adore. Pick one and imagine that you are them. Picture what a day is like for them and write about it. It’s your time to be famous and glamorous, don’t waste it.

  1. What You Got Away With

No one is perfect. We’ve all done and may still do something terrible. Here, write about something you did and got away with; you alone know that you are the culprit. It could be an event in your childhood years or something recent.

  1. Tear-Jerker

A long time ago, I never cried because of a scene in a movie. I don’t know why but nowadays any moving scene just brings me to tears. Though, I don’t like admitting it out loud.

Write a poem about a scene in a movie that released the floodgate of your tear ducts. For Black Panther, it is when Killmonger chooses to die rather than be healed. I was hoping both T’Challa and him could work together going forward.

  1. My Wish

We are now living in a world where genies exist, and wishes come true. You finally found the genie in the bottle, and as a thank you for letting him or her out, you get to make three wishes. What are they?

  1. You

Who are you? It can be a difficult question to answer. Write in the form of a third person and not use “I” or ”me.” Touch on the frame of your mind, your appearance, body, etc. What is your emotional state?

Don’t forget to describe your surroundings, too.

  1. Eavesdropper

Sometimes we overhear stimulating conversations without intention. Write about one in the form of a short poem, or story.

 

Conclusion

When you lack ideas on what to write about; use any of these exercises to kick-start your imagination. Ensure that you have a paraphrasing generator nearby for when you read through what you wrote, and see if you are making sense.

Free writing will help you overcome writer’s block. Don’t let it be the reason why you don’t trust the greatness of the inner you. It is fuel for your creativity.
